DuraSeal Masterline vs. Sampson: Which Oil-Based Hardwood Floor Finish Is Better?

2 min read

DuraSeal Masterline and Sampson Poly-U-Var are two established oil-based polyurethane finishes used by hardwood flooring professionals. Both protect wood floors, enhance their natural color, and provide the traditional amber appearance many homeowners prefer.

But is one better than the other?

At Brazilian Floors, we've worked with Masterline for over 15 years and Sampson for nearly a decade. Both have delivered consistent results, although we use Masterline more frequently.

What's the Difference?

Both products are available in satin, semi-gloss, and gloss, and both are suitable for residential and commercial applications.

We've found Sampson somewhat easier to apply in certain situations, particularly regarding flow and leveling. Masterline, however, has been a dependable product for us, even as formulation changes over the years have required adjustments to our application techniques.

Other flooring professionals have their preferences, too. But familiarity with a product often matters more than the differences between two comparable finishes.

Which One Lasts Longer?

We haven't observed a consistent durability advantage that would justify declaring either finish superior.

Both provide good protection when properly applied. Their longevity depends heavily on floor maintenance, traffic, cleaning methods, and environmental conditions.

We've experienced relatively few callbacks involving either product, with most issues related to application rather than manufacturing defects.

And remember, neither polyurethane is scratchproof. Dragging furniture across the floor will damage either one.

Drying Time and Odor

This is probably more important to homeowners than minor differences between the two products.

Masterline generally requires approximately 8–10 hours before recoating under suitable conditions. Sampson has published shorter initial drying times, although its recoating instructions must be followed separately.

Both contain solvents that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), producing noticeable odors and potentially harmful vapors.

We recommend staying elsewhere during application and initial drying, especially if you have children, pets, or anyone sensitive to chemical odors.

Your contractor should provide ventilation instructions and establish when it's safe to return. A dry floor isn't necessarily a fully cured floor, and neither condition alone establishes safe indoor air quality.

Why Choose Oil-Based Over Water-Based Polyurethane?

Oil-based finishes remain popular because they enhance the wood's natural warmth, creating an amber tone that often deepens with age.

Water-based finishes generally dry faster, produce less solvent odor, and preserve a lighter, more natural appearance. Premium water-based products can also provide excellent durability.

If you prefer the traditional warmth of oil-based polyurethane and can accommodate the longer drying period, either Masterline or Sampson is worth considering.

If minimizing odor and disruption is more important, ask your contractor about water-based alternatives.

Cost and Coverage

Both products compete in similar price categories, although pricing varies by supplier.

Masterline publishes coverage of approximately 500–600 square feet per gallon, while Sampson's published materials indicate approximately 400–500, depending on the application specifications.

Coverage alone doesn't establish which is more economical. Coating thickness, floor conditions, labor, and the number of coats all affect the final price.

At Brazilian Floors, we continue using both finishes because both have performed well for us. Masterline is our most frequent choice, but Sampson remains a reliable alternative.

Our recommendation is simple: Choose an experienced NWFA flooring contractor who understands the product, rather than choosing a contractor because of the label on the polyurethane container.
