Bona vs. LOBA: Which Water-Based Hardwood Floor Finish Is Better?

3 min read

If you're refinishing your hardwood floors, chances are you've heard of Bona. LOBA? Maybe not.

Both manufacture excellent water-based hardwood floor finishes, but is one actually better than the other?

At Brazilian Floors, we've worked with Bona for over 15 years and LOBA for more than 10. We've used most of their professional finishes, including Bona Mega, Traffic HD, and LOBA's 2K products.

Both deliver excellent results. We find LOBA easier to work with in certain applications, but there are good reasons to choose either manufacturer.

What's the Difference Between Bona and LOBA?

Both manufacturers offer single-component and two-component water-based finishes.

Single-component products, such as Bona Mega ONE and LOBA EasyFinish, don't require mixing a separate hardener. They're practical choices for many residential floors.

Two-component finishes, including Bona Traffic HD and LOBA 2K Supra A.T., require adding a hardener before application. They're designed for more demanding conditions and generally offer greater resistance to wear and household chemicals.

They're also more expensive.

Does every homeowner need a premium two-component finish? Not necessarily. A guest bedroom doesn't experience the same traffic as a kitchen, hallway, or house with three large dogs.

Which Is Easier to Apply?

In our experience, both are relatively straightforward, although LOBA has an advantage in several areas.

Its finishes often flow and level particularly well, making application somewhat more forgiving, especially across large areas.

Other flooring professionals have expressed similar preferences. Bona, however, has plenty of experienced contractors who prefer its products.

Familiarity matters. A contractor who has applied Bona Traffic HD for years may produce better results with it than with a product they're using for the first time.

Neither brand compensates for poor sanding, improper preparation, or incorrect application.

Which Looks Better?

Neither has a universal advantage.

Both offer different sheen levels and finishes designed to preserve or enhance the natural appearance of hardwood.

For homeowners seeking an unfinished-wood appearance, Bona Traffic HD RAW and LOBA 2K InvisibleProtect are worth considering.

But appearance depends on more than the finish. Wood species, sanding, staining, sealers, and application methods all influence the result.

Even satin finishes can look different between manufacturers. That's why we recommend reviewing actual finished samples instead of relying exclusively on photographs or product descriptions.

Which Is More Durable?

Bona Traffic HD and LOBA 2K Supra A.T. are premium finishes intended for demanding residential and commercial applications.

LOBA's Supra A.T. incorporates ceramic reinforcement, while Bona Traffic HD has a well-established reputation for wear and chemical resistance.

After years of working with both manufacturers, we haven't observed a consistent durability advantage that would justify declaring either one universally superior.

You'll find contractors who strongly favor one over the other. That's understandable, but personal preference isn't the same as controlled testing.

And remember, scratch-resistant doesn't mean scratchproof.

Furniture, grit, pet claws, and ordinary accidents can damage either finish. A heavy object can also dent the wood underneath without necessarily damaging the coating.

If someone promises you a hardwood floor that won't scratch, I'd be interested in seeing it.

What About Cost and Coverage?

Bona and LOBA generally compete in similar price categories. Their premium two-component finishes cost more than standard residential products.

Coverage varies by product, application method, and required coating thickness. Comparing the price of a gallon without considering the complete finishing system can be misleading.

Sealers, the number of coats, preparation, and labor all contribute to the final cost.

A more expensive finish isn't automatically a better investment, particularly when the application doesn't require it.

Manufacturer Support and Warranties

One thing we appreciate about both manufacturers is their technical support.

Over the years, their representatives have been responsive and willing to investigate concerns when problems arise.

Bona also offers an integrated professional finishing system, including sanding abrasives, equipment, sealers, and finishes, with warranty programs tied to qualifying products and procedures.

Bona enjoys greater recognition among homeowners, partly because of its consumer marketing and floor-care products. LOBA may be less familiar to the public, but it's well established among flooring professionals.

At Brazilian Floors, we continue using both manufacturers because we've had good experiences with both.

Ultimately, we'd be more concerned about whether your contractor understands the product they're applying than which brand name appears on the container.

An excellent finish in the wrong hands is still a poor investment.
